Comparison of the effects of TIVA and inhalation anesthetic techniques on olfactory functions and olfactory memory: a randomized prospective study

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of different general anesthesia procedures on postoperative olfactory functions and memory.
 Materials Methods: prospective was conducted with 97 patients. Patients were divided into three groups based induction maintenance technique: Group P (induction propofol), PS propofol, sevoflurane), S sevoflurane, sevoflurane). Butanol threshold identification tests administered 30 minutes (min) before operation (T1) min (T2), 8 hours (h) (T3) 24 h (T4) after operation.
 Results: values increased at T2 time point compared baseline in all groups, which returned T3 only P. There a significant difference between terms butanol points except T1. When T4 P, there T2, T3, S, as P.
 Conclusion: Propofol causes temporary impairment early period does not alter memory.
